Gekko Soh Okinawa, the place that just makes you want to drop by
I saw this yellow signboard on the street not so far from Kokusai Dori Street in Naha.
The narrow alley led me to a two story wooden building, the Gekko Soh.
At first glance, it’s a private home, but the inside was spacious with an atmosphere which could not be expected from the frontage.
Gekko Soh is a guesthouse with a generous atmosphere that makes people want to drop by when they simply want to chat with others, meet people, or just sit back and relax.
Aside from guests staying at Gekko Soh, a variety of people, like people in the neighborhood are also seen dropping by. During the day, they share different stories with each other and at night they enjoy themselves with lively conversations with a drink in their hands. There’s no need to worry about last trains. If you get sleepy, you can spend the night. It’s just like your own home.
There are two different kinds of guest rooms. One is the private guest room and the other is the “dormitory” where guests share the space with other guests.
A “guesthouse” and a “dormitory” were both something new to me that I learned on my visit to Gekko Soh since I wasn’t used to travelling. I guess learning something new is the best part about travelling.
Many business cards and messages were posted on the board near the entrance. This proves how Gekko Soh is loved by travelers who treasure every encounter.
Gekko Soh has appeared in the manga comic Sasurai Afro Tanaka. The main character Tanaka travels to different places on his motorcycle, and one of the places he arrives at is Tsukimi Soh, where Gekko Soh is the model for this guest house in the manga. If any of you are interested, it is worth checking out. A T-shirt with the manga print can be purchased, too.
There are several ways to spend your vacation in Okinawa. You can go to the beach, do some shopping, or even simply sit back and relax at Gekko Soh. I discovered that it’s the perfect place to find your own time to spend it the way you want to.
